Richard trailed off as he dared to peek down at the tiny body curled into him like a lifeline. It had been about five days since she'd been placed with them, and things were fairly quiet. The plan had been to put Brooklyn with Ruby, for the most part, but rather than moving her out of Richard's place, the little spare room where she slept was starting to accumulate more children's things...like a set of Disney bedsheets, a night light, and a modest few toys to go along with the children's books slowly creeping in on a shelf of his own research material.
Books, like the manual of magical creatures from Harry Potter he'd been reading to her in alphabetical order every night. He knew there was a movie, but he was frankly pleased that Brooklyn was more interested in the original Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, asking endless curious questions about every entry, as enraptured by Richard's various hypotheses as she was by the faux scientific prose.
That was when he knew she'd fallen asleep: when he got past more than three or four lines without a question or a mighty yawn.
Marking his place, he carefully set the book aside and gently gathered a sleeping Brooklyn up to settle her more comfortably into bed. Reaching for the light up plush toy that had fallen from lax arms, he watched her curl around it instead of him as she lapsed back into slumber, he slid cautiously out of the bed he'd been sitting in beside her...
...and found Alex watching him in the doorway. Shit.
He never should have told her to let herself in when she asked to meet with him...
"If you mention the word 'cute' in connection with my name, I'll sue you for libel." he deadpanned in a cautious whisper as he walked towards her, shepherding her out of the room with a hand resting lightly between her shoulder blades.
